Currently Monterey-Salinas Transit and citizen formed group Fort Ord Rec Users are deep in debate over the use of 58 acres of the former military bases lands. With the prior claiming they need the land for a new business park and the latter claiming that their rights as outdoorsmen and women are being infringed. Built on the site of an old military installation near Rodeo Beach, the center is currently enjoying its new home inside a purpose-built, state-of-the-art facility, and currently engages in educating the public on marine life conservation. When I tell people I’m a regular cyclist in San Francisco, people look at me with a mixture of admiration and disbelief. Usually, their big question for me is, “how do you deal with all those hills?” My first answer is something along the lines of, “I don’t.” On my daily rides to and from work or social gatherings, I carefully plan out my route so I can avoid using my lowest gears and I end up cruising from point A to point B. Hills or no hills, urban cycling routes can still be intimidating.
