Bike the bridge Headlands Loop (Self-Guided tour)

The Marin Headlands offer serene, peaceful riding with spectacular views, both on- and off-road. A strenuous but rewarding climb up Conzelman Road will culminate in a stunning view of the Golden Gate from Hawk Hill. Don’t forget to check out the Battery Spencer trail for some history along the way! It’s all downhill from there on a jaw-dropping descent to the Point Bonita lighthouse and Rodeo Beach -- or you have the option of exploring the rugged fire trails off-road first.

Ride Beyond the Bridge

For riders looking for more adventure after crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, the Marin Headlands Loop is one of the most scenic self-guided bike rides in the Bay Area. This route takes you out of the city and into the dramatic coastal landscape of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz, Angel Island, and the Golden Gate Bridge.

This ride is best for confident cyclists who are comfortable with hills, longer distances, and changing weather conditions. The climb up Conzelman Road is challenging, but the reward is one of the most unforgettable views in San Francisco.

What Makes the Marin Headlands Ride Special?

The Marin Headlands feel completely different from the city, even though they are just across the Golden Gate Bridge. Riders will experience quiet roads, ocean views, historic military sites, coastal cliffs, and some of the best photo stops in the Bay Area.

Highlights include:

Hawk Hill
One of the most famous viewpoints above the Golden Gate Bridge. After a steady climb, riders are rewarded with panoramic views of the bridge, San Francisco skyline, and the Pacific coastline.

Battery Spencer
A historic military site and one of the most popular Golden Gate Bridge photo spots. It is a great place to stop, rest, and take in the view.

Point Bonita and Rodeo Beach
Continue deeper into the Headlands for rugged coastal scenery, ocean air, and a quieter side of the Bay Area.

Kirby Cove and Point Diablo
Beautiful optional stops for riders who want to explore more of the coastline and enjoy dramatic views of the bridge from different angles.

The National Park Service describes Hawk Hill and Battery Spencer as popular scenic vistas along Conzelman Road, and the Parks Conservancy highlights the Marin Headlands for natural beauty and historic sites including Hawk Hill, Rodeo Valley, Point Bonita Lighthouse, and Fort Cronkhite.
